Digital Smile Design (DSD)

Digital smile design helps discuss possible changes by considering teeth, gums and facial relationships. A preview is not a certain outcome.

On this page

Digital smile design is a planning tool for discussing possible appearance. A preview does not guarantee the actual treatment result.

What Is Digital Smile Design?

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a new-generation planning method that analyzes not only the teeth, but the entire face.

Planning considers teeth, gums, lip movement and bite together. Software can assist this assessment; a single aesthetic ratio is not a target for everyone.

How Does the Process Work? Your Design Journey, Step by Step

Planning may involve photographs, impressions and a try-in. This stage should be distinguished from any later invasive treatment proposed.

1. Photography and Video Recording

At our in-clinic studio, we record your images using high-resolution professional cameras and intraoral scanners. Your facial expressions are filmed not only while you are still, but also while you speak and smile, because a natural smile should look attractive in motion as well.

2. Digital Analysis and Design

The collected data is transferred to DSD software. Using your facial features as a reference, our dentists digitally design the length, shape, and alignment of your teeth.

3. Mock-up: Temporary Try-in

Where suitable, a temporary mock-up can be tried in the mouth. It helps discuss shape and size but does not exactly reproduce the final restoration or biological response.

At this stage:

  • We can lengthen or shorten the teeth,
  • We can change their shape,
  • We finalize the design based on your feedback,

Uses of digital planning

  • Preview: Possible changes and limitations are discussed with the dentist.
  • Personalized: Every face is different, so we reject a one-size-fits-all approach to teeth.
  • Clear Communication: The phrase "I want it to look natural" means something different to everyone. DSD allows you and your dentist to communicate using the same visual reference.

The Relationship Between a Hollywood Smile and Digital Design

Hollywood Smile is not a standard medical diagnosis; the term is used for different appearance-related procedures. Examination determines whether any procedure is needed.

If ceramic restorations are considered, tooth preservation, gum health and bite require assessment. Digital planning does not replace these clinical checks.

The Difference Between DSD and Standard Digital Imaging

Two- or three-dimensional previews may be prepared depending on software and recording methods. Systems do not assess movement in the same way. Images do not replace clinical examination or assessment of feasibility.
