Assessing Children’s Dental Health

Children are not simply smaller versions of adults. Their anatomy, psychology, and dental structures are entirely different.

  • The Importance of Primary Teeth: Many parents believe, "They will fall out anyway, so there is no need for treatment." However, primary teeth are essential not only for a child’s nutrition and speech, but also because they act as space maintainers for the permanent teeth developing beneath them. Losing primary teeth too early can lead to serious orthodontic problems, including crowding, later in life.

Preventive Care: Taking Action Before Cavities Develop

1. Fissure Sealants

Suitable grooves on chewing surfaces can be sealed to reduce decay risk. Not every tooth needs a sealant, and cleaning and reviews remain necessary.

2. Fluoride Application

Fluoride application is planned according to decay risk, age and other fluoride sources. It is not a vitamin, and intervals need not be identical for every child.

3. Space Maintainers

After early loss of a primary tooth, space maintenance depends on the tooth, remaining space, permanent tooth development and bite. It is not always required and does not guarantee avoidance of later orthodontics.

Communication and Cooperation with Children

At Saatçi Dental Clinic, we use the "Tell–Show–Do" technique.

  1. Introduction: We introduce your child to the clinic and dental instruments in a playful and reassuring way.
  2. Trust: Give truthful, age-appropriate explanations without promising that a child will feel no pain or fear.
  3. Planning: Visits reflect the child’s needs and cooperation; staged care or specialist referral may be considered.

Treatment Under Sedation for Children Who Have Difficulty Cooperating

Sedation or general anaesthesia requires separate medical assessment. Appropriate staff, an authorised facility, preparation and monitoring are necessary; completion of all treatment in one session cannot be assumed.

When Should the First Dental Examination Take Place?

A dental assessment is recommended after the first tooth appears and no later than the first birthday. Pain, injury or other concerns need earlier attention.

An early visit allows oral assessment and advice on feeding and care. Treatment is also planned if needed.

Other Areas of Assessment and Care

  • Fillings and Pulp Treatments for Primary Teeth: Child-friendly fillings, including colored options, and pulpotomy treatments performed to preserve decayed primary teeth.
  • Dental Trauma: Emergency treatment for teeth that are broken, loosened, or displaced after a fall or impact.
  • Habits: Effects of persistent habits such as thumb sucking are assessed according to age and development.
