Dental Veneers: Expectations, Preparation and Limitations
In this article

A veneer is a thin restoration bonded to the front of a tooth and is not suitable for every cosmetic concern. Assess preparation, bite and gum health, and understand that removed natural tooth structure does not grow back.

Which changes may veneers address?

For suitable teeth, veneers may alter the front surface's shape, small size differences or colour appearance. Significant tooth-position problems, active decay or gum disease may not be solved by covering the front. Begin by describing what you want to change in your own words.

Why natural tooth tissue matters

Available enamel and existing fillings affect the plan. Preparation may be needed, and removed natural tissue does not grow back. A no-preparation design does not give the same aesthetic or functional result in every mouth. Discuss the required preparation and more conservative possibilities at examination.

How to compare alternatives

Whitening may be relevant to a colour concern, composite to a small shape change, and orthodontics to tooth position. None fits everyone. Compare the options by tissue preservation, maintenance and eventual repair as well as price, rather than assuming the most extensive procedure is the most appropriate.

What a try-in can help you assess

If a mock-up or try-in is available, consider speech, lip support and the bite alongside shade and length. Liking a photograph is not the only test of suitability. Share requests before irreversible stages. Final colour and fit require clinical checks in the mouth as well.

Keeping veneers and teeth clean

Continue cleaning gum margins and between teeth. Biting hard objects or nails can stress the restoration. Arrange review for a fracture, debonding, new sensitivity or gum bleeding; do not glue a piece back yourself. Veneers do not make the underlying teeth immune to decay or every future problem, and some may eventually need repair or replacement.
