A gum examination considers bleeding, pocket depths, recession and tooth support rather than appearance alone. Ask what the findings mean and how home care, professional treatment and review appointments fit together.
What Are Gum Complaints?
Gum-related complaints can appear in different ways. Some people experience bleeding only while brushing, while in others sensitivity, swelling or bad breath may also be present.
Bleeding while brushing the teeth
Redness of the gums
Gum sensitivity
Swelling of the gums
Bad breath
An appearance of receding gums
Discomfort while chewing
These symptoms alone do not constitute a definitive diagnosis. However, if they recur, an evaluation is advisable.
Why Should Gum Bleeding Be Taken Seriously?
Gum bleeding can sometimes occur due to hard brushing, the wrong choice of toothbrush or oral hygiene-related conditions. However, if the bleeding recurs frequently, a different gum problem may be underlying it.
For this reason, the cause of the bleeding should not be determined based on observation alone. During a dental examination, the gum tissues, tartar buildup and oral care status are evaluated together.
How Can an Examination for Gum Complaints Proceed?
For gum complaints, the dentist first listens to the patient's symptoms. How long the complaint has persisted, in which situations it worsens and the patient's oral care habits are evaluated.
Gum color and appearance
Tartar or plaque buildup
Gum bleeding status
Whether any teeth are loose
Signs of gum recession
Oral care routine
If deemed necessary, additional evaluation or imaging may be requested.
Is Home Care Sufficient?
Regular tooth brushing and the use of dental floss or an oral irrigator can support oral care. However, professional evaluation may be needed to determine the cause of an existing gum complaint.
Especially if bleeding, swelling or sensitivity persists, waiting with home care alone may not be appropriate.
What Can Be Done for Gum Health?
Teeth should be brushed regularly.
The spaces between teeth should be cleaned with appropriate methods.
Brushing too hard should be avoided.
The toothbrush should be replaced at regular intervals.
If gum bleeding persists, a dentist should be consulted.
