Recurring swelling or pain around a partly erupted wisdom tooth needs assessment of cleaning access and possible infection. Fever or spreading swelling needs prompt care; swallowing difficulties require urgent medical attention.
Why trouble can recur around a partly erupted tooth
When gum covers part of the tooth, food and plaque can collect beneath it and cleaning becomes difficult. This may contribute to inflammation around the tooth, but not every pain at the back of the mouth has that cause. The neighbouring tooth, decay, bite and other findings also need consideration.
Do not probe with a sharp object or try to cut the gum yourself. Clean accessible areas gently and follow the care method you have been shown. Even if a flare settles, record recurrences and difficulty eating or opening the mouth. Antibiotics alone should not be assumed a permanent solution. Spreading swelling, fever or marked opening restriction need prompt assessment; breathing or swallowing problems require emergency help.
How should you describe recurring symptoms?
Note the side affected, how often swelling returns and whether opening your mouth or eating is difficult. Temporary improvement is not proof of a lasting solution. Examination considers cleaning access, the neighbouring tooth and recurrence; monitoring or removal is not decided from symptom duration alone.
