Shorter teeth, flattened surfaces or sensitivity may prompt a tooth-wear assessment. Acid exposure, brushing habits and grinding need separate consideration; restoring the visible damage alone may not address the ongoing cause.

What Is Tooth Wear?

Tooth wear is the gradual loss of surface from the hard tissues of the tooth over time. It may be seen on chewing surfaces, at the necks of the teeth, or along the edges of the front teeth.

Not all wear is due to the same cause. Therefore, the type and cause of the wear should be evaluated through an examination.

What Symptoms May Indicate Tooth Wear?

Tooth wear does not always cause pain. Some people notice only a change in appearance, while others may experience sensitivity.

  • Flattening of the tooth edges

  • A shortened appearance of the teeth

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold

  • Shiny or flat areas on the tooth surface

  • Discomfort while chewing

  • A tendency toward cracks or fractures in the teeth

  • Old fillings becoming more prominent

  • Fatigue in the jaw muscles

If these symptoms are present, a dental check-up is advisable.

What Are the Possible Causes of Tooth Wear?

Tooth wear may be related to various habits or the structure of the mouth.

  • Teeth clenching or grinding

  • Brushing too hard

  • Frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks

  • The bite relationship

  • A habit of chewing on one side only

  • Biting nails or pens

  • Natural changes that occur with age

  • Conditions related to certain stomach acid problems

An examination is required to determine the cause.

Can Teeth Clenching Cause Wear?

Clenching and grinding can place excessive force on tooth surfaces. Over time, this may be accompanied by tooth wear, sensitivity, cracks, or discomfort in the jaw muscles.

If clenching is suspected, the dentist can evaluate the bite relationship, the tooth surfaces, and the jaw muscles.

Can Hard Brushing Damage the Teeth?

Brushing too hard or using an unsuitable brush may cause sensitivity in the gums and on tooth surfaces. A worn appearance may be noticed at the necks of the teeth.

For this reason, it may be helpful to ask your dentist for personalized advice on brushing technique and brush selection.

How Is Tooth Wear Evaluated?

During the examination, the dentist evaluates the location and degree of wear, the level of sensitivity, and the bite relationship. If deemed necessary, X-rays or additional assessments may be performed.

  • Which area the wear is located in

  • Whether there are signs of teeth clenching

  • The level of sensitivity

  • The condition of the gums

  • Old fillings or crowns

  • The bite relationship
