Why Review Existing Fillings, Crowns and Implants?
In this article

Existing restorations may need checks of their margins, surrounding gums and cleaning access even without symptoms. A review identifies maintenance needs and problems; age alone does not mean a sound restoration must be replaced.

Small changes worth reporting at a review

New food trapping beside a filling, shredding floss, bleeding around a crown or movement of a tooth on an implant are worth reporting. They do not always require replacement, but they need checking. A moving implant fixture and a loose upper component are different problems; do not test or tighten them yourself.

Comparison with earlier records helps distinguish a longstanding appearance from a new change. Care instruction, minor adjustment, repair or replacement may be different options. Ask what justifies intervention and, if monitoring is appropriate, what will be watched. A restoration reaching a particular age is not by itself a reason to replace it. Avoiding unnecessary loss of healthy tooth structure is part of the assessment too.

A review does not automatically mean replacement

The appointment assesses function and surrounding tissues. If a problem is found, monitoring, repair or replacement may be different options. Keep dates of previous work and ask which findings support any proposed intervention.
