You do not necessarily have to remain without teeth throughout implant treatment; temporary tooth options can be planned in many situations. However, fixed teeth cannot be provided on the day of surgery for every patient. At certain stages, denture use may need to pause to protect the healing site. The most suitable temporary solution should be discussed before extraction and implant procedures begin.

What is the purpose of temporary teeth?

Temporary teeth are planned to address appearance and daily needs until the permanent prosthesis stage. They are not expected to have the same design, strength or chewing capacity as permanent teeth. Appearance matters particularly when a front tooth is missing, while speech and comfort are important parts of the discussion when several teeth are missing.

Leeds NHS implant information explains that a removable temporary denture can be used during treatment and that restorative stages are planned separately. The solution available to you cannot be determined by the number of missing teeth alone. The extraction site, neighbouring teeth and planned surgery are assessed together.

Which temporary tooth options are available?

A removable temporary denture

A denture that you insert and remove yourself may be considered for one or several missing teeth. If you already wear a denture, whether it can be adapted is discussed. Its suitability for the wound or graft site must be checked. Do not force yourself to wear a denture that causes discomfort or adjust it yourself.

A temporary bridge supported by neighbouring teeth

Under suitable conditions, a bridge supported by the teeth beside the gap may be discussed. The supporting teeth and bite are assessed. The same bridge cannot be used for every gap. If this option is discussed, ask how it will be attached, how to clean it and how the transition to permanent treatment will work.

Temporary teeth attached to implants

For some patients, a single temporary tooth or a temporary bridge supported by several implants can be attached. The ITI selection criteria for single teeth and the full-arch loading consensus highlight assessment of patient and site conditions, particularly initial stability, when deciding on early use. Implant placement does not mean that a tooth can immediately be attached.

When might temporary teeth be unsuitable for use?

The plan may change when the healing site needs protection. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS explains that some patients may be unable to wear their existing denture for a period after surgery. Do not apply that period to your treatment yourself; ask your team when and how to wear it.

Discussing this possibility in advance is particularly important for front tooth treatment, work involving frequent speaking or upcoming travel. Ask what the alternative will be if the first option cannot be used. Do not assume that a statement such as “you will not be without teeth” means the same thing for every day and every treatment stage.

How should daily use and appointments be planned?

Once temporary teeth are made, appointments for adaptation, checks or adjustments may be needed. Changes in the gums during treatment may affect denture use. Tell your dentist if a temporary tooth loosens, breaks or causes a sore; do not repair it with household glue.

Obtain written instructions on foods, where you can chew and how to clean. The fact that a temporary tooth is visible does not mean that every food can be chewed comfortably. Describing speech and use-related difficulties at your check-ups helps plan the next stages.

Frequently asked questions

Can a temporary tooth be provided for a front tooth implant?

Options can be discussed in many cases. The method and timing depend on your individual conditions.

Are temporary teeth always fixed?

No. There may be removable or fixed options. A fixed option is not suitable for everyone.

Can temporary teeth be used permanently?

A temporary prosthesis is designed for a particular treatment stage. Follow the planned checks and restorative stages rather than deciding to use it permanently.
