Before a Dental Crown: Assessing the Tooth and Gums
In this article

Before a crown, the dentist assesses remaining tooth structure, decay or cracks, old fillings and gum health. Whether the tooth can be preserved and what preparation it needs come before choosing an aesthetic material.

What a crown can and cannot do

A crown can restore the outer shape and function of a suitable tooth. It does not treat underlying decay, a crack or gum disease simply by covering the area. The first question is whether the tooth can be maintained and whether enough structure remains to support the restoration.

Findings that can change the plan

The clinician checks existing fillings, remaining walls, symptoms, mobility and bite. Imaging or tests of the inner tissue may be needed. Root canal treatment is not a compulsory step for every crown; if advised, its reason should be explained separately. Sometimes a smaller restoration is sufficient.

Why gums may need attention first

Bleeding or swollen gums can complicate planning a well-fitting, cleanable margin. Necessary care beforehand helps the impression and try-in stages be assessed appropriately. Discuss where the crown will end and how to clean that junction at home. Looking white is not the same as having a healthy fit.

What you can report during the try-in

Explain whether the new crown touches before the other teeth, changes speech or feels uncomfortable against the tongue or cheek. Floss access and food trapping also matter. Raise concerns before final cementation rather than hiding them to finish quickly. Clinical checks of margins and fit remain the clinician's responsibility.

If you leave with a temporary crown

Obtain advice on eating, cleaning and whom to contact if the temporary part comes off. Do not use household glue. Report increasing pain, swelling or a substantial bite change. Confirm completion and longer-term review appointments. If travelling, leave time for fitting and checking rather than assuming placement on the last available day will be enough.
